This was a wonderful year and harvest for our Pinot Noir 2009. The beauty of the harvest and the making of this wine was that not much was done to the wine. This has always been the procedure at MARA.
It was picked early morning with Fog. We destemmed at 80% whole berry and then cold soaked for 4 days. When we allowed the juice to warm up it started fermenting on its own. We pressed off at 2 brix and finished fermenting in barrels. ML started soon after. We started stirring the wine within 5 days of going to barrel and it lasted until April 2010. The wine was tasted regularly and was left on the lees until just prior to bottling
What turned out was a Burgundian style of complex hints of fresh mushrooms, black raspberries and cherries and a forest earthiness. The mouth feel is dense and rich with and excellent balance of all the flavors mentioned. This is a wine that will TURN HEADS. As always, hand crafted, unfined and unfiltered and limited
